About The Artist
Stories and visions abound in the
work of Samuel Guilford. He refuses to restrict himself to one
style, and his creative expression flows freely from his brush into
narrative, still life and abstract paintings. Although he now lives
in Georgia, Mr. Guilford was born in rural Barbour County and raised
in Eufaula, Alabama. His paintings reflect Southern traditions of
storytelling, both familial and biblical, and Southern spirituality.
Mr. Guilford's work expresses his "profound respect for past
civilizations" and his deep spirituality.
Harriet Wyman, an artist in residence when Mr. Guilford
attended Eufaula High School, guided his early artistic style. At
the Atlanta College of Art his painting instructor, Mr. Smith,
gently led him to expand upon his established style. His
professional debut came in July 1983, when a collection of his work
was displayed at the Richard B. Russell building in Atlanta,
Georgia. The exhibit, called "First Impressions" consisted of ink
and watercolor paintings. Since then his work has been featured in
Sylacauga, Alabama at the Isabel Anderson Comer Museum and his most
recent showing was at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
